Armand Berton (1854-1927)
French
Armand Berton was a French artist of the realist school. He was born in Paris in 1854 and gained his artistic training at the French Academy of the Arts, where he was a pupil of Millet and Cabanel. In 1882 he earned a medal for a painting. The artist was so prolific that the school later instituted an “Armand Berton Poussielgue” prize for talented artists, a highly prestigious award for artists. Interestingly, the artist was deaf.
Berton was best known as a painter of portraits and nudes. The artist painted in a realist style but often implemented Romantic notions of painting into his work. He depicted nudes and portraits, as well as mythical and Classical scenes of such subjects as Psyche. His soft, refined brushstrokes and dark, atmospheric palette define his work.
Berton has produced a large body of work and is acknowledged by the fine art community as a significant professional artist. Berton’s work has been exhibited throughout the world including Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and The Luxembourg Museum. |
